The Willows

Glenorchy, New Zealand

This beautiful row of partially submerged willow trees is located on the shore of Lake Wakatipu. The famous trees and the surrounding water are a popular spot for visitors in Glenorchy and the lake itself has been used as a location for a number of films including The Lord of the Rings. The scenery here is breathtakingly beautiful and remained a location I had wanted to capture for a long time.

On my last evening in Glenorchy I set out to shoot the famous willows as the light began to change. I hadn’t been there for long before the sun dipped behind the mountains and the sky turned a light shade of pink before deepening into a brilliant glow. The intensity of the light covered everything around me and was like nothing I had ever seen before in any sunset or sunrise.
