Death Valley National Park, California, USA
The Mesquite Sand Dunes are a sprawling expanse of near white sand located just past Stovepipe Wells Village. While the dunes are named for the hardy Mesquite trees that support life in this harsh environment, the area is also home to skeletal, weathered remains of trees that have long since succumbed to the heat.
Once night fell, the desert sky opened up with a massive display of stars. I found a dead Mesquite tree at the edge of the dunes to use as a foreground anchor against the cosmos. I experimented with several frames, but this specific shot was a lucky break. A passing car on a nearby road caught the tree in its headlights, providing a perfect natural back light that separated the dark branches from the night sky.
