Upper McLean Falls
McLean Falls | The Catlins, New Zealand
McLean Falls is located in The Catlins and stands as one of the most beautiful locations in New Zealand. It is the tallest and perhaps the most spectacular waterfall in the region because it reaches 22 metres in height at the main drop. That measurement only accounts for the top section where the water first meets a pool before it descends much further over a series of impressive terraces.
I arrived late in the afternoon while sunlight still hit the surrounding trees and rocks. I initially decided not to stay long due to the brightness and returned when the day began to fade. After looking through the shots I actually preferred the way the different pockets of light shine through the forest canopy and onto the rocks below. The contrast created a depth that the softer light could not match.
