Skippers Canyon
Queenstown, New Zealand
Skippers Canyon is a historic and scenic gorge located just fifteen minutes north of Queenstown. It stretches twenty two kilometers in length and is accessed via Skippers Road. This track is extremely narrow with sheer drop offs and rock ledges that keep you on the edge of your seat as it winds around the gorge for roughly twenty seven kilometers. The road is regarded as one of the most spectacular in New Zealand and some publications name it among the top fifty most scenic roads in the world.
The scenery here is amazing and offers sweeping views along the gorge and the Shotover River below. It is not difficult to see why this location was chosen for filming the Lord of the Rings. Seeing the vast landscape from these heights provides a powerful sense of the rugged beauty and history found within the canyon.
