Thors Well

Cape Perpetua, Oregon, USA

Thor’s Well on the Oregon coast often looks like the very end of the earth. Known as the drainpipe of the Pacific, this feature is actually a hole in the rock that appears to swallow the ocean. While the hole is likely only about ten meters deep, it still produces a scene that is not for the faint of heart.

The site is most spectacular at high tide when the water washes violently over the rocks and funnels into the cavern below. I arrived just before sunset and found a small group of photographers already positioned right in front of the opening. As I began shooting, the waves grew higher until they eventually swept across the rocks and soaked our feet. We had to hold our position against the torrent to avoid being pulled toward the edge. As the sun set, the stormy sky turned a beautiful orange glow that matched the raw power of the water.
