Hooker Valley Track
Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand
Many travelers rank the Hooker Valley Track as the finest half day hike in New Zealand. The four hour return journey follows the glacial flow of the Hooker River and winds through a landscape of rugged peaks and alpine meadows. The trail eventually leads to a terminal lake where icebergs often drift across the water as Aoraki Mount Cook stands watch in the distance.
The route is famous for its three large swing bridges and a long boardwalk that stretches across the valley floor. Although I walked this path twice during my stay, heavy clouds obscured the scenery for the majority of both trips. On the second trek however the timing was perfect. As I reached the boardwalk the clouds began to pull away and gradually revealed the mountain in all its glory. It was an amazing sight to witness.
