One of the most popular short hikes in New Zealand (some might say the best half-day hike in the country) is the Hooker Valley Track in Aoraki/ Mt Cook National Park. The Hooker Valley hike takes around 4 hours return, leading up the Hooker Valley, along the Hooker River and ends at the glacier lake where you can usually find some icebergs floating around, and on a clear day there are amazing views of Aoraki/ Mount Cook.

 

The walking track turns into a boardwalk for part of the way and also crosses the Hooker River three times where there are big swing bridges you need to get across. I would have to say that this was one of the most beautiful scenic hikes I have ever done, the alpine scenery along the way is stunning. I hiked this track a couple of times while here and on both occasions the clouds covered the sky for the most part. As I reached the beginning of the boardwalk I stopped for a moment to watch the clouds gradually reveal Mt Cook. What an amazing view!
