The journey through the Gates of Haast reveals a lost world so spectacular and remote that UNESCO designated it a World Heritage area. From Haast to Jackson Bay the landscape is filled with empty shingle beaches and wetlands that sit beneath the soaring peaks of the Southern Alps. This region offers a true playground for a photographer as the views overlooking the coastal terrain are absolutely stunning.
The shoreline at Haast feels quite desolate with plenty of rocks and all sorts of driftwood scattered about. I had the entire place to myself with not another person in sight while I spent the afternoon there watching the sun setting over the Tasman Sea.
