Blue Moon
The Spit, Main Beach, Queensland, Australia
I had been planning to capture the Milky Way positioned directly above this lifeguard tower for quite some time. This particular weekend provided the ideal opportunity as the galaxy aligned perfectly with the tower, all while a second full moon for the month rose into the frame.
This phenomenon is known as a blue moon. It occurs because the lunar cycle of 29.5 days is slightly shorter than most of our months, allowing a second full moon to occasionally peak through before the month ends. These events only happen about once every three years, a rarity that gave us the famous saying “once in a blue moon.”
As the moon hung low on the horizon, it took on a heavy, glowing hue. Because the light must travel through a much thicker layer of the Earth’s atmosphere at this angle, the moon shifts into shades of yellow, orange, and red, much like a setting sun.
